Meet the Himba, the last of Namibia’s semi-nomadic pastoral tribes who live in the remote Kunene River Region. They are known for their striking appearance from covering their skin in a cosmetic mixture of butterfat and an ochre pigment.
Today, around 50 000 Himba continue to live by ancient traditions while managing to find a way to live side-by-side with western civilisation in neighbouring settlements.
Interestingly, the Himba language has no word for the colour blue and so they “see” only hues of green.

Although powerfully built, they are shy, gentle animals and live in tightly-knit troops with one or two alpha males in each. Their close social bonds are on display as they groom each other or hug and tickle the young with obvious affection.
